Questions

Everything couples ask me before booking.

If yours isn't here, mail me and I'll answer it properly, then add it to this page for the next couple.

How far in advance do couples book you?

Most book nine to fourteen months out. Peak Winelands Saturdays in February, March and November go first, sometimes eighteen months ahead. If your date is close, ask anyway — I keep a couple of gaps for late bookings.

Do you travel?

Yes. Anything within 60km of Stellenbosch has no travel fee. Beyond that I charge fuel and, if it's more than a two-hour drive, one night's accommodation at cost. I've shot in the Karoo, the Garden Route and twice in Namibia.

When do we get the photos?

A preview gallery of around 60 images within 48 hours, so you have something to post and send to family while you're still glowing. The full gallery lands within five weeks, usually four.

How many photos do we actually get?

Around 350 for a half day and around 700 for a full day. That's edited, culled images — not everything the shutter caught. You don't want the frames where someone blinked, and I don't want you to have them.

Do we have to do an engagement shoot?

No, but it's included in the full-day collection and I'd take it. An hour in front of my camera before the wedding means you're not learning how to be photographed on the day itself. It makes a visible difference.

What happens if it rains?

We shoot anyway. Rain gives you soft, even light and the pictures are often better than the sunny version. What matters is that your venue has a covered plan B — I'll ask about it on our first call and scout it on the day before your guests arrive.

What if you get sick or your gear fails?

I shoot two bodies with dual card slots, so a card failure can't lose your day. If I'm physically unable to be there, I'm part of a group of six Winelands photographers who cover each other, and you'd get a full refund of the difference if their rate is lower than mine.

Can we get the RAW files?

No. The edit is the part you're hiring me for, and a RAW file looks flat and wrong to anyone who isn't a photographer. You get full-resolution edited JPEGs with print rights, which is what you actually need.

What's the deposit and when do we pay?

A 30% deposit holds your date, and it's the only part that isn't refundable because I turn away other work for that Saturday. The balance is due two weeks before the wedding. If you need to split it further, ask — I've never said no.

Do you do the family group photos?

Yes, and I do them properly. Send me a list beforehand, keep it to about ten groupings, and nominate one loud relative from each side to round people up. Twenty minutes, done, back to the party.

4 2027 Saturdays still open

Still stuck on something?

Ask me directly. I'd rather answer three awkward questions now than have you book someone else because you weren't sure.
